The Ministry of Defence has officially announced the teams selected to take part in its Grand Challenge, a competition aimed at finding new ideas to counter the threats faced daily by our Armed Forces at home and abroad.
For two weeks during the summer of 2008, an army of autonomous robots will march across the Wiltshire countryside.
In February 2007, the Mod announced the Grand Challenge: to design an autonomous system to detect, identify and locate a range of threats in an urban environment. Stellar Research Services recognised that a bespoke consortium was required and spent 2 months putting together a unique and effective team, Team Stellar. Stellar Director Julia Richardson led the proposal preparation phase and the proposal for SATURN (Sensing and Tactical Urban Reconnaissance Network) was delivered to the MoD in early May 2007. Out of 23 proposals, 6 were fully funded – Team Stellar was one of them. The project, managed by Stellar Research Services, is now underway.
